Первую пневматическую шину изобрел Роберт Томсон. Его патент от 1846 г. содержал подробное описание и цель применения покрышек. По мнению Томсона, они сокращали тяговую силу экипажа и соответственно снижали уровень шума.

Поначалу камера Данлопа имела схожесть конструкции с камерой футбольного мяча, но прогресс и талантливые инженеры поспособствовали выходу компании «Dunlop» в пятерку лучших производителей шин в мире.
